We celebrate former Nigerian president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan this day November 20.

Goodluck Jonathan was born in 1957 in Otueke, in the Eastern region of River state. He is from the Ijaw ethnic group.

Following former president Umaru Yar’Adua death on 5 May 2010, Jonathan was sworn in as the new president and commander-in-chief of the armed forces of Nigeria.

He was President of Nigeria from 2010 to 2015 but served as Vice-President of Nigeria from 2007 to 2010 and as Governor of Bayelsa State from 2005 to 2007.

Jonathan studied zoology at university of Port Harcourt and worked as an education inspector, lecturer and environmental protection officer before going into politics in 1998.

Jonathan contested and lost the 2015 presidential election and upon defeat became the first sitting Nigerian president who failed to be reelected. Jonathan’s term as President of Nigeria ended on 29 May 2015 when he handed over to Nigeria’s current president, Muhammadu Buhari.

The former president turns 59 today November 20, 1957.
