Yesterday Thursday May 18, tragedy occurred after a three-storey building under construction collapsed at Richard Abimbola Street, Ilasa, Lagos. Some victims were left trapped.
According to information, the building caved in around 2:30pm, but rescue agencies swiftly moved to site and worked frantically to rescue the trapped victims.
The general manager of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Adesina Tiamiyu speaking with Premium Times said “Three persons were recovered dead and were taken to Lagos Mainland Mortuary Yaba.” The injured, according to him, were taken to Isolo General Hospital.
Residents in the area claimed the construction, which began around February 8, was noticeably tilting to one side, but when they brought the attention of the tilt, the contractor added a pillar on the bent side, unfortunately the incidence occurred yesterday.
The building was reportedly roofed a day before the incident.
According to a resident, “Whenever the regulatory body visit, they just collect money from the developer and go away. When he added another floor and people complained, it was sealed but was re-opened that same day and work continued. How can you build such an edifice so quickly?”.
