1923 – The first baseball game is played at Yankee Stadium in New York City, with the Yankees beating the Boston Red Sox 4-1


1955 – Eminent scientist Dr Albert Einstein, who developed the theory of relativity, dies in his sleep in the hospital aged 76


1949 – Ireland becomes an independent republic


1906 – San Francisco Earthquake: An earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, shook the town of San Francisco , California and Thirty thousand homes were either partially or wholly destroyed and an estimated 3,000 are reported dead.


1938 – Superman made his debut when he appeared in the first issue of Action Comics. (Cover date June 1938)


1946 – The League of Nations was dissolved.because  it reportedly failed in its purpose to prevent future world wars.


1966 – “The Sound of Music” won the Oscar for best picture of 1965 at the 38th Academy Awards.

2013 –  “Iron Man 3”, directed by Shane Black, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow, premieres in London

2011- Nigerian footballer Olubayo Adefemi dies. He was a member of the 2008 Nigerian Olympic Team and one-time Super Eagles player. The 25 year old died today Monday, April 18, 2010 in a motor accident in Greece. The Nigerian born was reportedly driving on Egnatia Odos, near the city of Kavala, Greeceo catch a flight to Nigeria when his car skidded off the road. May his soul rest in peace.
