Nigeria’s 19th National Sports Festival tagged: Centenary Games 2014, billed to hold in Calabar, the Cross State capital has been postponed, the Sports Council has said.

The decision was reached at a meeting of the Joint Technical Committee for the Festival in Calabar, late Monday, after the inspection of facilities by a team led by the Sports Minister, Dr. Tammy Danagogo and Deputy Governor Efiok Cobham of Cross Rivers State, as most facilities remained uncompleted.

The Communique was signed by the Director General of the National Sports Council, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, the Chairman of the MOC, and the Deputy Governor who heads the Local Organising Committee.

News of the planned postponement of the festival had signalled fear earlier among athletes, as some of the facilities remained under construction showing a state of unpreparedness by the Cross River State Government to host the event on November 23.

A meeting scheduled between the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Centenary Games Main Organising Committee (MOC) early to ascertain the readiness of the facilities had failed to hold.
