…Orders the Destruction of Lagos State Retirees’ Shops in Jakande Estate
The current government of Lagos State under Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is losing its popularity amongst the masses by the day, not long ago, the brutality meted out on the protesting women of Otodo-Gbame community, in front of the Governor’s office, Alausa Ikeja by the Police, was ignored by the Governor and he did not deem it fit to address them over the demolition of their homes by government agents. Recently, residents of Chief Lateef Jakande low cost housing estate, popularly called ‘Jakande Estate’, an estate known to be predominantly inhabited by civil service retirees, of the Lagos State Government were shocked to have agents of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and their housing counterparts as guests. They came bearing the directive that all shops sited in the estate must be demolished.
This indeed came as a rude shock to residents of Jakande Estate, as most retirees who own shops once worked for the state government. Furthermore they made attempts to see the Governor and reason with him, as these shops since retirement have become their sole means of livelihood. But Ambode as is his custom, refused to see them.
Sources revealed to Happenings.com.ng, that after unsuccessful attempts to meet the Governor, Officials of the state became hostile and issued deadlines for when their wares must be evacuated from these shops or they will be seized before demolition.
The demolition process in the estate, has since been completed, leaving scores of aged retirees with increased blood pressure (BP).
This demolition action according to sources, have led to the rampancy of criminal activities as there are more dark and secluded spots where unscrupulous elements can perpetrate their criminal activities.
There are more questions than answers on the state government’s motive for demolishing these structures, since the government has done little or nothing in terms of infrastructural development in the estate.
It is also of note that these shops operated by these retirees, were not constructed close to drainages, thereby impeding the flow of water.
Hence, the reason why these hapless retirees are plunged into this situation by the Ambode led Government is yet a mystery to residents of Jakande Estate.
