Arsenal suffer humiliating defeat to Bayern

Few people expected Arsenal to perform a miracle by being the first team to overturn a four goal deficit in the Champions League, but none would have expected another 5 – 1, a similar scoreline when they visited German giants Bayern Munich two weeks ago.

With an aggregate of 10 – 2 the Gunners were knocked out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage for the seventh consecutive season, and this may be Wenger’s final moment in the competition as Arsenal’s coach as a myriad of fans have been calling for his resignation.

Theo Walcott gave the Gunners a faint stint of hope that they might just be able to pull the greatest come-back in the history of the competition with his twentieth-minute goal, but the second half saw Bayern score five goals, yet again, to dash all hopes and quell any dreams of lifting the coveted big-eared trophy this season.

Arsenal were reduced to ten men when captain, Laurent Koscielny, brought down Robert Lewandoski in the box at the 53rd minute, in a debated decision which saw the Polish striker convert from the spot kick for his side’s first goal of the night. Bayern then went on to score another four goals in 17 minutes in a display that was utterly different from the powerful and inspiring performance the Gunners put up in the first half of the game.

While Bayern carried out their own protest against ticket prices by throwing toilet rolls on to the pitch, the main attention was on the ‘Wenger Out’ demonstration before kick-off.A large gathering of fans made it known outside the ground that they did not want the Frenchman in charge of the club.

Wenger has yet to decide whether to accept the contract extension or leave the club he has managed since 1996.

This week’s saga surrounding Sanchez, the protests and finally now this heavy defeat might have brought the 67-year-old closer to making up his mind.
