#AskHappenings: 3 years together but not sure about our future

Dear Happenings,

I have been dating my boyfriend for 3 years now, I’m 27 and he’s 29. Everything is okay between us, but the issue is each time I ask where the relationship is headed, he doesn’t say any thing definite. In fact one time he said we are just hanging, like we are just dating. I don’t know what he’s trying to say, what I do know is that I would love to settle down soon. What could his answer mean?

Thanks

Kemi.

HAPPENINGS

Dear Kemi,

If your boyfriend after 3 years together only sees you both as “just dating” then there’s indeed a reason to be worried. It indicates that he doesn’t really take the relationship seriously or wants to take it to the next level. I would say you just lick your wounds and  walk away now since he isn’t saying anything definite about your future together.

There is no point staying in a relationship just because you’ve been there for that long and put in a lot of effort. If you desires aren’t tilting in the same direction, it’s better you leave now.

On the other hand, he may just not be ready at the moment, maybe he has other things he wants to achieve and that’s okay. Since you have been together for 3 years, and according to you everything is fine apart from this, you should be careful not to make any hasty conclusions or decisions. What you need to do is have a frank discussion with him about this, maybe he may just not be ready to commit in that way just yet and this is what you need to find out -is he giving you a time frame?, Can you wait?, Does he not see you two in that way?

In the end it’s up to you to decide how long you are prepared to wait or to just move on.

Good luck.

Happenings.
