The Grand Finale of Spelling Bee Nigeria 2016 took place April 22nd at the NECA Hall, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos. This edition had participants from 9 states namely; Abuja, Lagos, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Kwara, Oyo, Osun, Ogun and Nasarrawa.
The winner got an all-expense paid trip to the 89th Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington DC, USA as a guest, plus a scholarship fund, the first runner-up got a hundred and fifty thousand naira cash, an all expense paid trip to Person Publishing House, Harlow UK and a scholarship fund, while the second runner-up got a hundred thousand naira.
The Spelling Bee is a competition designed to inculcate the basic imperative of effective communication, ultimately impacting improved spelling skills, development of poise, increased student’s vocabulary, pronunciation and accurate word usage. The competition is organised by Young Educators Foundation – an NGO that promotes literacy and education.
Shoggy Tosh, publisher Tosh Mag TV and PR London; Funke. T. Durodola , GM Radio One (FRCN), author and founder media mentoring initiative; Chinenye Ochuba Akinlade, MBGN 2002, CEO AIVY Edge limited and Pelu Awofeso, Award-winning journalist, blogger and publisher were all judges for the Spelling Bee Nigeria mentorship session which was held on April 21st in Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos.
