Former France and Barcelona left back was announced on Wednesday as the new ambassador for Spanish club, Barcelona. The Catalan club revealed that an agreement was reached with the 37-year old “to be an ambassador and representative of the club at different events in the next few years. He will also now form “a permanent part of the globetrotting (Barcelona) veterans team, as well as collaborating with institutional events in liaison with the Social Area and assisting with activities related with the FCBEscola soccer schools”.

“It makes me really happy to be officially part of the club. We’ve been talking for a long time. As  an ambassador, I’ll try and present the club in the best way possible, in different countries in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. It’s an honour to represent the club.” he told Barcelona’s official website.

The Frenchman who just returned to top-flight football after a liver transplant, spent six years as a player with the Spanish giants with a total of 193 official appearances and winning 15 major trophies, including four Ligas and two Champions Leagues. He left in 2013 after recovering from his transplant but was not offered a new contract. Abidal was first diagnosed with a liver tumour in March 2011 but he continued to play well. He underwent the transplant a year later.

The defender appeared 67 times for France, he played in all but one of the games in the 2006 World Cup where France lost to Italy in a penalty shoot-out. Abidal retired from professional football in december 2014.
