An Alagbado Customary Court in Lagos State on Wednesday dissolved an eight-year-old marriage between Sola Abdullahi, 26, and Lanre Abdullahi,30, over battery, threats to life and lack of care.
Its president, Mr Olubode Sekoni, said all efforts by the court to unite the couple proved abortive.
“The marriage between Sola and Lanre Abdullahi had broken down irretrievably.
“You ceased to be addressed as husband and wife, you shall go your separate ways and maintain the peace anywhere you see yourselves ,” he said.
Sekoni said that the custody of the children should remain with their mother until the final decision of the Ikeja Family Court.
“The man shall be paying N15,000 monthly through the court for the children’s upkeep and also he shall be responsible for the educational and medical bills of the children.
The man must pay the sum of N100,000 as compensation to the woman to enable her settle down with the children,” Sekoni ruled.
The petitioner, Sola Abdullahi, an house wife, had come to the court on Dec. 22, 2014, seeking the dissolution of her marriage citing battery, threats to life and lack of care as her reasons.
Sola who lives at 24, Raji Oba St., Iyana- Ipaja, a suburb of Lagos, told the court that her husband, was a night crawler derived pleasure in beating her whenever they had any misunderstanding.
“Whenever my husband comes home late at the night and I ask him where he is coming from, he will attack me and start beating me.
“We do have constant arguments that usually result in his beating me up . There was a day he beat up, stripped me naked and threw me out of our matrimonial home in the middle of the night.
Any time we had sex, I do have a nightmare and after waking up, I am always afraid,” she said.
The mother of three, ages : eight, six and four years, told the court that her husband was not taking care of her and was always accusing her of adultery which was not true.
“He was always showing disrespect to my mother and other members of my family.
He is also fond of abandoning our matrimonial homes at times for between two days and three days without returning .
I am tired of the marriage, I want a dissolution,” she said.
However, her husband, Lanre Abdullahi, a business man who lives at 24, Solomon House, Meiran, a suburb of Lagos, admitted to assaulting his wife.
“I do beat her whenever she is naughty but I still love her. I do not want the dissolution but if she insisted, no problem, she can have the custody of the children,” he said.
