#AskHappenings: I had sex with my sister-in-law

Dear Happenings,

I’m a 40 year old man, married to a wonderful woman and we have 3 kids whom we love so much. My wife had to travel out of Lagos for 2 weeks and before she left her younger sister, who is 25, called to say she was coming to spend her one month holiday with us. My wife and I were quite excited because we had been trying to figure out how to take care of the kids while she was away. By the time my sister-in-law arrived, my wife had travelled. I never really paid attention to her looks before, but she looked even prettier than I could remember. I was happy to have to have her around because she was a lot of help with the house and kids. After the kids might have gone to bed, we would usually just watch tv or talk before going to bed. My wife and I haven’t really had that much time for each other so this woke up the desire in me… on one of these nights, one thing led to another and my wife’s sister and I ripped our clothes off and had wild sex. It felt so good. I felt guilt and shame after what I had done. I apologised to my sister-in-law and she did same. I thought it was over but the problem now is a few days later my sister-in-law asked that we have sex again, and when I refused her, she threatened to tell her sister, my wife, when she arrives. What do I do?

Dear Tade,

It would of benefit to you to confess to your wife what you did with her sister. Chances are she would after likely throwing a tantrum and being angry, forgive you, or your relationship might not survive the betrayal. Either way, it’s better she hears the truth from you and soon because you don’t want to deal with blackmail.

If you truly regret what you’ve done and love your family  then you would know that you and your wife’s sister have been really selfish. It’s going to be messy, but honesty is the only life line you’ve got right now. You also have to be ready to deal with the consequences of both your actions.

What matters now is to be sure that nothing like this will ever happen again.
You also would need to examine the reasons for having an affair outside of your marriage and deal with those issues that triggered it so there is no future reoccurence – in or out of your marriage. If there are underlying problems, get them sorted. Your wife certainly doesn’t deserve it; she deserves much better. Ask yourself what you got out of it afterwards. Was it worth it? Surely the pleasure was only temporary.

Good Luck.
