Imo state governor Rochas Okorocha, has come under heavy criticism, for erecting a statue of South Africa President Jacob Zuma in the state.

The event, which took place over the weekend while Zuma was on a two-day visit to Nigeria, had in attendance former president Olusegun Obasanjo and other dignitaries including members of the Imo state cabinet.

According to reports, the statue cost the Imo state government N520m to erect.

Governor Okorocha also instructed Eze Imo, His Royal Highness Samuel Ohiri to confer on Zuma the traditional title of Ochiagha Imo (The head of Imo warriors).

The Imo state government also named a road after the South-African President – Jacob Zuma road.

Meanwhile, some Nigerians have accused the Governor of Imo state of being insensitive to the plight of Nigerians, noting that Nigerians are being killed in South-Africa.

Moreso, the fact that President Jacob Zuma is being tried for various corruption related offences in South Africa is expected to be enough reason for Governor Okorocha not to associate himself with Zuma, simply because he is a governor under a party which says it is fighting corruption.

Concerned Nigerians have criticized the governor for not diverting such huge amount of money into paying civil servants in the state who are being owed over 6 months salary.

Since the event happened on Saturday, social media and mainstream media have been agog with many expressing their disappointments at such a tragic decision.

Meanwhile, Governor Okorocha and President Jacob Zuma also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will provide free education for poor children in Africa.
