Lagos Dirtiest City in the World

Of the many strikes against the incumbent Governor of Lagos, Akinwunmi Ambode, Waste Management takes precedence. According to the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWAM), Lagos ranks as one of the dirtiest city in the world.

Mr David Oriyomi, the Vice-Chairman of AWAM made this declaration while speaking with the press, on Tuesday, 19th September 2018.

Recall that in 2016, Ambode without explanation, disbanded waste managers, Public-Private Participation (PPP) and installed the foreign company, Visionscape.

The ‘Cleaner Lagos’ initiative at the time, gave birth to Visionscape. However, the foreign company failed to properly manage the enormous waste production of the ‘Megacity’.

Speaking on the prompt dismissal of AWAM, Oriyomi said. “The most disturbing is that if implemented, it would have resulted in the massive business closure.  And majority of over 25,000 employees would have lost their jobs.

“We made frantic efforts to see and appeal to the governor, but to no avail.

“After various false start dates, the initiative was launched by placing bins indiscriminately across the state with very little provision to evacuate the heaps of waste.

“This was responsible for the increase in the volume of waste on the highways and medians”, he said.

Undoubtedly, the inability to properly manage, the large amount of waste, sent Lagos back to the pre-199 era.

Additionally, Oriyomi said, “Our city returned to pre-1999 era and the once celebrated clean city has now become one of the dirtiest cities in the world.”

In light of the many travails befalling Ambode’s re-election bid, AWAM, openly declared its support for Sanwo Olu, as the next Governor of Lagos state.
