A walk through the streets of social media reveals that most people consider that a man should bear financial responsibility for their relationship and for their partner. If not all, at least, most of the money cost. While this may have worked in the traditional setting, more and more men are revolting against this. Be that as it may, this status quo brings to question what the woman’s role in a relationship really is.

Support, care, loyalty, advice, commitment, house chores, feminine touch and other such things have been mentioned as the woman’s duty.

While all of these are good things and are necessary in a relationship, they are not cast in stone. You as a man or a woman must first:

Decide the things that you want in a partner: If sex is what you want, be clear. If companionship is what you prefer, good too. Just be clear on what you want. When you decide what you want, only seek out people that have what you want.

Talk about expectations: When you meet someone you consider a great person to partner with, be honest with them about what you want. Avoid assuming. Talk about as much as possible things. Talk about the things you want on your table. Sex, finance, career, short term and long term plans/goals. It should include things like: laundry, house chores, maintaining the car, likes and dislikes, etc. Talk about the big and the small, the tiny and the large, everything. This point is especially important to avoid dashed and unrealistic expectations.

Communicate: As often as possible, have a review of where you are, how far you have come and how much farther you want to go.

Lastly, decide what works for you and your partner. Every relationship is unique and should be treated as such. If you believe in gender roles and your partner does too , go for it. If you don’t, that’s fine too.
