Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo: The ultimate head-to-head quiz of 2016

By William ‘Bantu’ Irubor

We take an in-depth analysis of the stellar performances by these two amazing footballers in the year 2016.

Who had more in the year of 2016? Figures are for both club and country unless otherwise stated…

*Goals for club and country – Messi got the better of Ronaldo in this category with 59 goals. Ronaldo didn’t do bad either, he netted 55 times for club and country in 2016 which is pretty impressive. Not many strikers can boast of such proficiency.

*Most goals from outside the box in laliga – Messi scored 9 long-range shots to help Barcelona clinch the laliga title last year, as against Ronaldo’s 7.

*Better goal ratio – Ronaldo had a better goal ratio per game than in 2016 despite the Real Madrid star playing fewer games (57) compared to Messi (62). At 0.96/per game for Ronaldo and 0.95/per game for Messi, you would agree that both players had a phenomenal year.

*Most goals with weaker foot – Ronaldo was more prolific with his weaker (left) foot netting 7 times, while Messi was able to find the back of the net with his weaker (right) foot just once in 2016.

*Most club assists – You would agree yet again that Messi is a better team player than Ronaldo, with the former assisting his team mates score 25 goals as against the former’s 14 assists.

*Most hattricks – Ronaldo scored a hattrick a whooping 7 times last year, while Messi didn’t do badly either with 6 hattricks in 2016.

*Directly involved in more goals – This would further cement the claims by many Barcelona fans that Messi is the better all round team player, being directly involved in 91 goals for club and country in the year 2016, 19 more than Roanldo could manage (72) for club and country during the same time.
