Two goals late in the first half broke Georgia’s resolve in Tbilisi as Germany won 2-0 to move level on points with Poland and Scotland at the top of Group D, temporarily at least.

Germany were the better side for the majority of the 90 minutes but found their hosts in stubborn form while Marco Reus hit the bar in each half.

However, with just over six minutes of the opening period remaining the world champions found a way through as Reus scored for the second successive match. And the visitors would head into half-time with a two-goal advantage as Thomas Mueller finished smartly from the edge of the area.

They would have been expected to push on for more goals after the break but while comfortable rarely threatened a third, although Reus did strike the woodwork.
