In what can only be described as historical, the capital of Tunisia elected into office its first ever female Mayor, on Tuesday, July 3, 2018, Souad Abderrahim. This will be the first Mayoral election in Tunis since the Arab Spring Revolutions in 2010, that sought to bring down authoritarian regimes in North Africa and the Middle East. This revolution toppled the regimes of Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi; Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak; Tunisia’s Zine El Abidine Ben Ali; Syria’s Bashar al-Assad; Yemen’s Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The female politician, who is 53 years old, contested under the Ennahda Party, despite facing misogynistic objections from conservative male politicians, Souad Abderrahim went on to win the Mayoral elections. Her win as the first ever Mayor of Tunis, is pivotal as it tells the world that women are beginning to have a place in politics, in Tunisia.

As the Mayor of Tunis, her traditional title will be ‘Shiekh’, which is usually only reserved for men in positions of leadership.

Indeed Tunisia is making history.
