Nigeria is still basking in the euphoria of her win against Iceland on the 22nd June 2018, with an impressive 2-0 scoreline. Inadvertently Nigerians adopted Naira Marley’s single ‘Issa Goal’, released in the latter part of 2017 as the unofficial victory song. In this hit single, he featured Olamide and Lil Kesh.

Before the song came to be the unofficial theme song for the Super Eagles after their impressive victory, the slang ‘Issa goal’ had come to be adopted into the repertoire of Nigerian slangs. Thus, when the Super Eagles thrashed Iceland, shouts of  ‘Issa goal’ quickly metamorphosed into the song itself.

Furthermore it is easy to adopt the song as the unofficial theme song after the victory of the Super Eagles, as it endorses the ‘Shaku Shaku’ style of dancing, which is currently the rave of the moment, even the Super Eagles are not left out of the ‘Issa Goal’ and the ‘Shaku Shaku’ craze. As there are several viral videos of them dancing ‘Shaku Shaku’ to the ‘Issa Goal’ music.

As if to further establish its relevance as the unofficial theme song of the Super Eagles, a remix was sponsored by Coca-Cola and it featured Nigerian music heavy weights like Falz, Simi, Olamide and Kesh.

In my opinion, the remix comes off as forced, as it fails to deliver the effortless melody of the original version and it is more of a hype for its sponsor, Coca-Cola, than enjoyable music. The remix also comes off as rushed, considering it was released just recently, on 19th June 2018, to ride off the buzz of Nike’s unveiling of the very fashionable Super Eagles Jersey.

There are also several viral videos of Naira Marley’s single and its remix, currently flooding the internet and Nigerians are hopeful that there will be more victory dances with this unofficial theme song after the match against Argentina on Tuesday, 26th June, 2018 at 7pm, West African Time.
