NPFL: Teams racing for glory and surviving relegation

With five rounds of matches left, the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) is approaching its fiery stages with the stakes much higher now than they were at the start of the season and as the battle at both ends of the table intensifies.

Current league leaders Plateau United [59pts] would have to secure maximum points from a possible 15, while hoping closest rivals MFM united [56pts] slip somewhere along the line.

Although that may be quite tricky as Plateau United have to face tougher opponents than their rivals, opponents battling to survive being relegated. And they still have to play hosts to a resilient MFM side that is gunning for the trophy.

MFM’s goalless draw against Enyimba has made the title race more intriguing. They need to win all their remaining games and hope that  Plateau United drop at least four points to stand a good chance of landing the title.

Akwa united (3rd) and Eyimba FC (4th), with 51points each may still have an outside chance of securing the title, but that is a long shot as they are currently 8points from the top of the table.

At the bottom half of the table, the fate of Remo FC seems sealed as they seat comfortably at the bottom of the table, having accumulated a meagre 29points from 33 games. But the fight for survival is still quite an open contest for the other teams with just 4points separating Sunshine Stars at 11th position [45pts] and Rivers United at 18th position [41pts].

We are definitely going to see plenty of upsets and drama on the last match day of the season, because it is my prediction that the eventual winner, and relegated teams would remain unknown until the last day.
