#Opinion: Nollywood at it again with “Ara Saraphina”

I came across, in one of the dailies, the synopsis of a movie (nollywood), yet to be released, and to say I was shocked is an understatement.

So you decide to make a movie and the only thing you could come up with is a story centered around a woman’s breast – how two men fall for her; get in face-offs; one ends up killing the other. He confesses he was under the spell of her boobs and advises young men to desist from getting infatuated with girls. He is thereafter sentenced to death by firing squad.

The moral of the story according to Chibuzor (the producer) is that, “girls come and go. Don’t get too carried away by what you see today because tomorrow has a lot to offer.”

In my own understanding – the moral of the story is to warn men about the danger of falling for a woman with ‘humongous breasts’!  Really! That’s it?

This is by far the most juvenile and ridiculous thing I have ever read in a while now. I can’t seem to wrap my head around it.

Have we lost all ounce of creative juice, all sense of originality and relevance?

I believe that even if it’s comedy, there are better stories we can laugh about. Our movies must quickly step out of the cliche kind of stories and give viewers more value for their money. Then you wonder why many Nigerians would rather see a foreign movie than one of ours…
