#Opinion: Top 5 Nollywood’s most talked about series

Right from time, soap operas have been not always been my defining television moment except for an epic Mexican soap ‘Secret of the Sand’ which captured me like magnet with it’s intriguing story line and believe me i can still remember every scene.

I must confess i’m really not a huge fan of Nigeria’s soaps but lately i have been impressed by some productions.

With utmost pride, i can state that the Nigerian film industry has improved tremendously, leading to better quality soaps and movies. Today i give you the most talked about series in Nollywood which has got Nigerians at the edge of their seats:

This is definitely a household name in Nigeria – it created a buzz  so much  that it got my attention and it didn’t disappoint me with the blend of intrigue, deception; drama and romance.

From Victor Olaotan who played the lead role of Fred Ade-Williams to Iretiola Doyle who showed off her exceptional skills on screen…. no wonder it’s been awarded  “the most successful television drama on Nigerian television” in recent times. In case you haven’t seen this series, the fourth season is set to be phenomenal.

The Johnson’s Family

Everyone needs a good laugh at some point of their lives – ‘The Johnson’s family’ gives the maximum excitement needed to change a person’s mood.

Despite the fact that the sitcom was premiered some months back it has spread like wild fire making it one of the most talked about TV series today. The Jonhsons which features top comic actors like Chinedu Ikedieze (Efe), Charles Inojie (Lucky) and Ada Ameh (Emu), no doubt you will be engrossed in the series if you watching it for the first time. It may sound unreal, but when you watch i’m sure that it will evoke hearty laughs with a positive frame of mind.

 Lekki Wives

If you fall under the category of people who are tired of seeing the regular Nollywood faces every time, then Lekki Housewives will be an interesting watch for you. Not only do viewers refer to it as Africa’s ‘Real Housewives’ and ‘Basketball Wives’ but it has all the “guilty pleasure juiciness” of your favorite reality TV shows. The Blessing Effiom Egbe production has captured the heart of movie loving Nigerians with the brilliance and technical suitability of the story.

Starring the likes of Adaora Ukoh-Miranda, Keira Hewatch-Peace,Katherine Obiang-Uju,Kiki Omeli-Loveth, and Chinonso Young-Cleopatra. Lekki is a high brow location in Lagos synonymous with wealth, power, and ostentatious lifestyles. Everything seems picture perfect for the Lekki wives on the outside, but behind the glitter and glamour they parade is the toughness and the struggle to live life on their own terms.

Gidi Up

The series whose title is culled from the popular term “Las Gidi”, a nickname for Lagos city focuses on the lives of four young adults (Obi, Tokunbo, Eki and Yvonne) who are pursuing success and independence in the city of Lagos, revealing the challenges they are faced with at every step of the way in their quest to achieve their dreams. The series parades the likes of OC Ukeje, Somkele Iyamah, Adeyemi Okanlawon, Titi Sonuga, Bimbo Manuel, Iretiola Doyle just to mention a few.

As part of the drive to curb the spread of HIV as well as create awareness for AIDS, the MTV Staying Alive Foundation and MTV Base Africa has dedicated a TV series, Shuga to spread the word. The Shuga series has been around for three seasons now, with the third one shot in Nigeria for the first time.

The season three consist of 8 episodes which capture the essence of a lot of young people today in the diversity of Lagos. The third season of the hit series returns with a star-studded cast like Chris Attoh, Tiwa Savage, Lupita Nyong’o , Ikubese Emmanuel, Okezie Morro etc. and a good storyline to match.
