The English Premier League To Trial VAR This Season

Premier League To test VAR
VAR is used in Ligue 1

The Premier League is set to trial VAR at 15 matches this season – starting after the international break, according to SkySports.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited will observe the technology before giving its verdict to Premier League shareholders next year.

If the trial is successful(which is very likely), it could be part of the Premier League next season.

The first trial will take place for five 3pm kick-offs on September 15. This is to check if the VAR hub at Stockley Park, near Heathrow can cope with decisions arising from multiple matches.

There will be the ‘as-live’ match scenario replicated in the VAR hub, but there won’t be contact with the officials.

VAR has been used in recent EFL Cup games and will also be tested at selected FA Cup games.

VAR is already in use in La Liga and some other leagues across the World. It was also deemed a success after it use at the World Cup in Russia.

The Premier League are confident their decision to delay the introduction of the system has been vindicated.
