English top flight clubs have all agreed in principle to the use of VAR in the 2019/2020 Premier League season.

The agreement was reached at a shareholders’ meeting on Thursday after the non-live VAR trials done by the PGMOL were analysed.

The technology which is already in use in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup has been trialled at several Premier League games.

Trials have however been restricted to just the video assistant referee hub without contact to officials on the pitch.

It’s believed the trial has been a success hence the adoption of the technology by Premier League clubs.

A statement on the official Premier League website read:

“Premier League clubs have agreed in principle to introduce Video Assistant Referees (VAR) to the competition in the 2019/20 season.

The non-live testing of the technology will continue till the end of the season especially on Saturday afternoon games.

VAR is already in use in the other four of the top five European leagues this season.

The Premier-League are now set to make a formal request to the IFAB and FIFA to use it next season.
