Comic movies are one of the pillars and most watched genre in every movie industry today, and one actor who have time and again proven to be one of the best in the field is Eddie Murphy. The Comedian, actor, voice actor, film director, producer and singer has done it all.
With more than two decades’ worth of an uneven track record, Eddie Murphy remains one of the most talented and successful comedic movie stars of all time. As he clocks 53 today, we appreciate and celebrate his contribution to the comic movie industry.
In no particular order here are the top 5 greatest Eddie Murphy movies of all time:
1. Trading Places (1983)
Murphy’s first film following his breakout success with 48 Hrs. is still his funniest. John Landis directs and Dan Aykroyd co-stars in a satire of ’80s greed and excess that also works as classic screwball comedy, and the way that Murphy’s fast-talking style meshes with Landis’s old-fashioned approach makes Trading Places something truly special.
2. Coming to America (1988)
Coming to America represents the end of Eddie Murphy’s Golden Age; from here, his career would give way to vanity projects and box office bombs, with a few exceptions. But Coming to America, which reunites Murphy with Trading Places director John Landis, remains the comedian’s sweetest film — it has none of the edginess or mean-spirited humor of some of his earlier films, instead opting for warmth, humanity and romance.
It’s also the first movie in which Murphy plays multiple roles (thanks to the Oscar-winning makeup effects of Rick Baker), which is a trend that would practically define the second half of his career
3. Bowfinger (1999)
By 1999, Eddie Murphy had already burned off a lot of the good will afforded to him by his Nutty Professor comeback, but that’s probably because not enough people saw his incredible dual-role turn in the Steve Martin-penned Bowfinger.
Playing egomaniacal movie star Kit Ramsey, as well as his dim-witted brother, Jiff, Murphy achieves two things: with the former, he mercilessly lampoons his own image and pokes fun at some of the rumors of his past sexual indiscretions, while, with the latter, he invents one of funniest, most original comic creations of his entire career.
