TREE PLANTING: Comrade Ayodele Adewale to be honored as Lagos State Environmental Ambasador

Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) organizes an advocacy campaign on tree planting in Amuwo Odofin Local Government with the theme: *”Plant a Tree”*
Amid the heavy downpour, many dignitaries came out in their numbers for an event organised by the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) to support the continuous advocacy for the planting of trees in Amuwo Odofin Local Government. The local government has been selected to benefit from this year’s initiative tagged “plant a tree”.
Top on the list of dignitaries present were the General Manager of LASPARK Mrs. Bilikis Abiola Adebiyi, the immediate past Chairman of Amuwo Odofin LGA and life patron of NATA Lagos State Chapter, Comrade Ayodele Adewale, the Baale, Iyalode and Aare of the Amuwo Odofin royal dynasty, Councillor representing Ward K, Honourable Adewumi Ogunshina, representative from the CDA, proprietor of New Foundation School and local government officials.
In her opening remark, the GM of LASPARK thanked everyone for defying the heavy rainfall to grace the occasion.
She disclosed that the Lagos State Government under the leadership of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode had made giant strides in beautifying the State and ensuring a greener Lagos. An initiative spearheaded by LASPARK who has the responsibility of maintaining the operational parks/gardens and planting trees in the State.
She praised the Comrade Ayodele Adewale’s administration for the role played in making Amuwo Odofin LG environmentally friendly during his tenure from Oct. 30th 2008 to Oct. 30th, 2014. She said over 6000 trees were planted during his administration which is still evident in all parts of the community.
In recognition of his work   Comrade, Ayodele Adewale will be honoured as Lagos State Environmental Ambassador.
In his address, Comrade Adewale spoke passionately about environmental issues and the impact on a depleted ozone layer, it’s consequence on health, the environment and reiterated the importance of tree planting in mitigating the negative impact.
Using his administration in Amuwo Odofin LG as a case study, Comrade Adewale said that the environment was a key priority for him. A dedicated climate change unit was set up in Amuwo Odofin LG to examine ways of mitigating the adverse effect climate change has on lives and the environment. The unit changed the landscape of the community by planting over 6,000 trees; established the Amuwo Odofin Green Club made up of 30 youths who were taught the art of horticulture; initiated advocacy programmes to enlighten the constituents of actions that could reduce the effects of climate change.
In recognition of our efforts in this area, the local government was the recipient of several awards including an international award at the United Nation Headquarters in New York.
Comrade Adewale also underlined the role of the private sector in ensuring sustainability of the initiatives. He gave the example of the Apple Junction roundabout which was handed over to Mega Chicken fast food 6 years ago to beautify and oversee saying the place is still well maintained and beautiful to behold.
In her closing remarks, Mrs Daudu, head of operations at LASPARK, spoke on the importance of tree planting and thanked Comrade Ayodele for his support over the years.
The program ended with invited dignitaries leading the way in planting some trees from Festac Link Bridge towards the popular Apple Junction.
