There is a video of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris Kpotum, going viral or social media, its virality is not in the phenomenality of his speech, he went viral because in that video, he struggled to read his speech, thereby coming off as a comedian.
While this episode has made him the subject of several jokes and hilarious memes currently flooding the internet, his fumblings, point to a rather sad truth, that those we have at the helm of affairs may be somewhat clueless. Clearly to occupy a position of authority in Nigeria, is not founded on merit, rather it is one of connections. Positions of power in Nigeria becomes a bargaining chip, to get favours amongst the elite.
In the mad clamour for change and for younger people to take over running the country, I wonder if the qualification for key positions would be based solely on merit or would it become a payment plan as it has always been.
Probably as a form of damage control for this embarrassing episode, it is alleged that his speech was doctored to ridicule him and make him sound like a court jester. Thus I ask, to what end?
The hilarity of the situation is not lost on us, that our public officers may be just as clueless as the citizens ther are meant to lead. A scenario of the blind leading the blind, until we all stumble and fall, unable to rise.
If the speech by the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris Kpotum is not a colossal National embarrassment, I don’t know what else is.
